It’s Filler Time! (part 2)
This one goes out to my friend Brian Hindman in Texas. Back when I worked at Dallas Semiconductor Brian and I were both misfit toys – Brian was a computer programmer sidelining as a Christian singer/songwriter, while I was a computer programmer sidelining as a filmmaker. In the computer industry creative endeavors are generally looked upon with an inquisitive head tilt, so it helps to helps to have a partner in crime.

Brian helped me finish The Emperor’s New Clothes by doing some additional vocals and the score, for which he learned to play the recorder and the mandolin. He then went on to a more ambitious project: producing the album Breaking Ground, which was a collection of original songs by members of his church. He recorded each of them in his home studio and did all the mixing of the songs. It was quite an endeavor, especially since the songs ranged in styles from bluegrass to rock. I actually really liked Matt Stevenson’s “Standing” from the original recording he made in Brian’s home studio, and I asked Brian if I could make a video from it. Bear with it – I hadn’t learned pacing yet, and so as a video it’s fairly slow.
Brian’s song “My Life Is An Empty Tomb” has just been put on rotation at Live365 radio, so here’s hoping for his future success.

Aren’t partners in crime supposed to make money?
This is Brian!
Nick and I really were/are misfit toys (except we didn’t want to become dentists). I love helping Nick out with sound/music because he usually pushes me in challenging directions. It pretty much goes something like, “What? You want me to play authentic medieval instruments? I don’t have any authentic medieval musical instruments! I’m not sure what those are. Where is Wikipedia? Hmmm.” And, now I own 3 recorders and 2 mandolins. I have even written two more songs on the mandolin and soloed on numerous occasions on other people’s tunes…
Here’s another more recent one: “What? You want me to sing funny? I thought that’s what I did on a regular basis. Oh, not that — funny as in ‘ha ha’.” Now, I’m an inductee in the Evil League of Evil (and on the DVD release of a highly popular TV show). How did that happen?
Anyway, I get “producer” credits on the above music video simply because I paid for the film processing. Isn’t that cool? I think that goes on in Hollywood still these days, where guys that don’t have much knowledge about film are listed as “producers”…
By the way, the scrawny 12-year-old songwriter in the video (okay, Matt wasn’t 12, but he’s pretty young looking) is now married with children. He did not marry the girl in the video. The girl (Stephanie) still sings but is a major HR power broker with a successful company. She married Brian — I’m honored she named her husband after me. Hmmm, I wonder if she can be one of my “producers”…
So, Nick, I’m looking forward to the next collaboration! Make some kind of cool George Lucas thing. I’ll learn how to play a string section if you do!
(Thanks for the plug about my song — you can purchase it on-line through Amazon.com now. It’s also airing next week on an internationally syndicated radio show…)
